Internet addiction treatment

Centers have existed since 1995 that specialize in treating Internet addiction. Proctor Hospital offered one of the first inpatient settings and several have sprung up across the US. It is something that is slowly evolving and being addressed as a serious condition, requiring inpatient residential care. More will be discussed related to inpatient care in the years to come. For now, the biggest treatment strategy that works is cognitive-behavioral talk therapy, used on an outpatient basis. Treatment studies can be read online at http://www.netaddiction.com/ under ARTICLES but we have long-term data suggesting recovery upon 12 weekly sessions and upon six-month follow-up. This is a good start to a larger dialogue where we need more data on treatment options and treatment efficacy for each. Right now, it seems treatment centers are opening without using standardized techniques or assessment procedures. We need more collaboration on what will work and development of clear standards of practice.

There is no Magic Pill or Quick Fix

I know how it feels to want a quick way out of addiction. For years I was looking for the end all solution that would make everything all better in a hurry. However, porn addiction is like many other things in life, there is no quick fix or magic pill. I had to write this post because I see more and more people looking for a quick way out and I see more websites offering a supposed quick solution.

I have received comments and questions about different herbs and drugs that can help someone overcome addiction. There are some things out there, including herbs and prescribed medications, than can help reduce sex drive. However, these things will not cure you of your addiction. They may work for a time but it will be a false sense of success. I repeat, drugs and herbs will not bring long lasting success. Not only that but decreasing your sex drive is a bad idea since these urges of the body, when used correctly, are what can bring us so much joy and motivation in all of life’s activities. Trust me, I tried herbs and felt so melancholy and unmotivated.

Here is a quote I live by now: “NO QUICK FIX – When it comes to CHANGE, slow is fast and fast is slow. Ironically, the search for a quick answer delays the process you will eventually have to go through. If you try to go too fast and skip-over the necessary steps, you’ll slow down the whole process. But if you go slow and CHANGE one step at a time—that IS the fastest way.” — Anonymous

The best and fastest way to overcome a porn or sexual addiction is through using correct methods to change your brain and your heart. The best way to do that is through signing up for the program below. This does not mean that you will never be tempted again. So long as you are a human being you will have temptations but if you have your mind and body under control they will been seen more as a character building challenge rather than something to be feared.

“All or Nothing” Rarely Works with Porn Addiction

One lesson I found very hard to learn as I set out to overcome porn addiction is that most of the time success will come gradually. There are those who appear to drop the addiction and never have the problem again. However, for most people, this is not the case. Most people have to gradually overcome these addictions for it requires a changing of the heart which only comes with time and effort.

I’ll be honest with you, I wanted success and I wanted it now, not later. I wanted to make a great effort in the beginning then glide through life with ease. This attitude and expectation only prolonged my recovery. It wasn’t until I realized that the freedom I wanted would come gradually and over time that I had real success. On that note I will say that even with this corrected attitude I still needed the correct methods of overcoming addiction which came from the porn addiction recovery program that I have written a review on.

So when you start working with the correct methods you must pace yourself and not expect perfection. What you can expect, so long as you persevere and pick yourself up quickly every time you fall, is to get stronger and stronger. Trying to be perfect or perfectly handle every temptation will only bring failure. It is almost a guarantee that you will stumble and make mistakes as you set out to gain control of your life. Don’t let these setbacks discourage because you are most likely closer to success than you think.

The analogy I started using is playing sports. If you start out playing football you’re probably not going to be very good. But if you keep going to the games and keep practicing you will get better and better. You will make errors and mistakes, its expected. However, you don’t give up and throw the game just because you made a mistake. No, you get back in the game and try to do better. This applies to life and it applies to overcoming porn addiction. When you make a mistake just get back in the game of working to overcome and do better than before without expecting perfection. You will progress in amazing ways with this attitude and approach.

I am now facing many years in prison – David’s story

I’ve been dealing with pornography addiction since about 10 years old. My addiction led me to seeking out more deviant types of pornography and ultimately to choosing to receive and view child pornography. I am now facing federal charges and many years in prison. I have been sober for 9 months and my marriage and life is improving every day.

My wife and I have started a blog to discuss our experience. Please feel free to check it out – www.fromshame2grace.com. There is hope, there is a way out.

God bless,
David

It is particularly poignant that David is now in custody awaiting sentencing. He is communicating his blog entries from jail, so that his wife Lisa can post them online and explain her own reaction and feelings.

The vast minority of guys who struggle with porn do not stumble into child pornography. However, David’s story does remind us of the potential risk and dire consequences. The blog is a brave, honest and philosophical account of salvaging hope from these horrible circumstances.

Thank you David and Lisa for posting here.

New centre opens its doors to internet porn addicts

A US therapy centre now offers residential treatment for people struggling with pathological computer use.

The reStart Internet Addiction Recovery Program provides a 45-day course of treatment, including individual and group counselling, life skills coaching and motivational activities and outings. Anyone troubled by a web surfing, gaming or texting habit can be eligible for the programme.

Dr. Hilarie Cash comments that many participants have “extensive exposure to porn, but not much to sex”.

“We are leading increasingly isolated lives. People go online to meet the need for human contact. But it is not as satisfying. We are animals that need to see, hear, touch each other. Without human contact, we become anxious and depressed.”

I’ve been caving the last few days

Stress!

Stress has had me caving the last few days.

I decided to quit my job because I was being lured along by my managers into thinking that if I worked hard enough that I would get promoted. Weeks turned to months and eventually I figured out that they never intended to promote me. Working harder than my better paid co-workers and being passed up on promotion has caused me a lot of stress.

So I’ll be job hunting in the next couple of days. I’m also moving in a week or so. All of this has been stressful and I’ve caved to pornography as a result.

A lot of you guys who read this blog are Christians or what not. I’m not religious but I do believe in some Buddhist ideas.

Being in the present
Loving the universe
Believing that I can create anything
Being detached

These ideas are very powerful and when I take the time to really live them in the present moment, it helps me cope with challenging situations.

My hope is that I’ll turn to these ideas in the next few days instead of pornography during this stressful time.

Day 8

Still going strong. I’m staying off the computer and focusing on developing my hobbies and just things I like to do in my spare time. It’s amazing how much time things like television and web browsing can take up. Once you free yourself, you’ll have all this time for you to figure out what you actually want to be doing.

My stress has been relatively low the last few weeks and I can thank that for being able to go the last 8 days without pornography.
